PLANNING AND ZONING ADMINISTRATOR

The Town of Newport is seeking qualified professional applicants to fulfill a leadership role of Planning and Zoning Administrator. Key responsibilities include administering the Town’s planning and code enforcement functions, building codes, zoning ordinances and nuisance codes.  A core function of this position shall be to conduct critical inspections of buildings and property, issuing building permits and processing applications for rezoning of property and zoning variances, and review and processing of subdivision plans within the territorial and extraterritorial jurisdiction of the Town.  Inspection responsibilities include enforcement of State building codes governing construction, electrical, plumbing and mechanical as well as enforcement of local zoning and nuisance codes and ordinances. Work requires development and preparation of planning and zoning studies and recommendations for consideration by the Planning Board, the Board of Adjustment and the Town Council.  Work also involves the development   maintenance of the Town’s GIS system, including supervision of the technical input, verification and revision of GIS data. Considerable tact and diplomacy are essential in dealing with contractors, property owners and the general public.  This position is under the general supervision of the Town Manager. The salary range for this position is $48,443 - $70,186 annually with an applicant submission window of open until filled. The successful candidate will have graduated with a college degree preferably a bachelor’s supplemented by course work in the building and construction trades and/or 5 to 10 years of experience in construction or related construction inspection experience which provides the required knowledge skills and abilities; considerable experience in local government at the municipal or county level preferred. TOWN CLERK / TAX COLLECTOR

The Town of Newport is currently accepting applications for a full-time Town Clerk / Tax Collector who provides a direct link between the citizens and their municipal government. This position also performs administrative duties in the collection of taxes for the Town.

Work in this critical position would involve a variety of para-professional tasks in support of the record-keeping and public access of the Town to include administering the tax collection program; developing and implementing programs to collect delinquent taxes; coordinating tax billings with the county and handling more complex inquiries regarding taxes. Work requires considerable knowledge of state laws regarding ad valorem tax collections in North Carolina. Town Clerk duties require considerable knowledge of the Town Charter, governing ordinances, structure and organization of the Town; considerable knowledge of the principles and practices of public administration, municipal government, personnel management and supervision; good knowledge of English, composition, and report writing; good knowledge of office management methods, procedures, and computerized equipment and programs pertinent to the Town Clerk's position; ability to interpret North Carolina General Statutes as they relate to the Town Clerk's functions; ability to effectively maintain public records and documents; ability to prioritize tasks to ensure that deadlines are met; ability to supervise the work of others through planning, organizing, instructing, motivating, and objectively evaluating performance; ability to communicate effectively, both orally and in writing, with diverse audiences; and ability to establish and maintain effective working relationships with town officials, employees, and the general public.

Fall Events with the Town of Newport

Due to hurricane Dorian the Newport Community 5K Run has been rescheduled for Saturday November 23rd beginning at 9am.

  • Registration begins at 8am. The  registration tent will be on Verdun St, behind Town Hall. To register online go to runtheeast.com.
  • The theme is Turkey Trot. Dress for the part and shake your tail feathers.
  • Come learn something about “Trotting Jim” inside our tent. Encourage your children to pen Christmas cards for the troops.
