Water Treatment Plant Operator/ Wastewater Treatment Plant Operator

The Town Of Newport is seeking a Water and Wastewater Treatment Plant Operator that is a proactive individual with the ability to function as part of a team and independently under general supervision. The applicant will operate the Water and Wastewater Treatment Plants and  make adjustments to the equipment to maintain proper water quality, water flow and volume, perform basic preventive maintenance to pumps and related equipment; perform water sampling and maintain daily records and reports and any other assigned task. Applicant should have the ability to perform demanding physical tasks and work in all types of weather conditions. Hours are Monday- Friday 8AM to 5PM, but must be able to work nights and holidays if called in for emergency repairs or disaster response to restore or keep water and wastewater in service to our customers. Position requires rotating weekend duty and after hours on-call duty once training on the system is complete.

Experience Required:

A High School Diploma or GED.  Possession of a valid North Carolina Driver License (Class B CDL with Tanker within 90 days of employment). Minimum requirements include NC C-Well and NC Grade 2 Wastewater Certification.   May consider training the right candidate. (Trainees must pass the C-Well certification test within one year and Wastewater Grade 2 within two years of employment.)  Salary Negotiable DOQ competitive benefit package, including medical, life, 401K and state retirement.

PLANNING & ZONING ADMINISTRATOR

The Town of Newport is accepting applications for a  Planning & Zoning Administrator.   The position will be responsible for administrative functions for planning, zoning, flood and minimum housing as needed.    The successful applicant will provide administrative and professional support to the Planning Board, Board of Adjustment and Town Council.   Additionally,  they will  

  • Reviews development and related land use permit applications, site plans, subdivision plats, variance applications, etc.
  • Examines applications for compliance with established plans and ordinances, and applicable local, state or federal regulation.
  • Gathers, assimilates, interprets and analyzes a variety of data, requests, appeals and information pertaining to planning and zoning operation.
  • Receives, researches and processes zoning questions, requests and appeals.
  • Undertakes a variety of special projects and studies requiring the use of technical knowledge such as grant applications.
  • Prepares and issues zoning permits and flood permits; may assist with code enforcement
  • May update ordinances necessary to implement plans, policies, etc.
  • Performs related tasks as required.

Minimum qualifications include any combination of education and experience equivalent to graduation from an accredited college or university with major course work in planning, engineering or a related field with  6 months to 3 years professional experience in urban planning.     AICP helpful, but not necessary.    Starting salary range is $46,500-$51,000 with excellent benefit package.   Resume, town application, and references should be sent to Angela Christian – email  (achristian@townofnewport.com) or P.
