The Town of Newport Fire Department is accepting applications for the position of a fulltime Assistant Chief of Fire & EMS. The Assistant Chief will assist in the management of the daily operations of Fire and EMS, and will also work with but not limited to training, staffing, call response, budget, command fire ground operations, fire inspections, and work in team building efforts with other local, county and state agencies. Must have the ability to function well within the Fire Department Management Team.

The Fire Department is a municipal combination career / volunteer department that provides Fire and EMS service to nearly 15,000 residents in a 75 square mile district. The district is mostly residential with numerous commercial structures.

Education and Experience : Any combination of education and experience equivalent to graduation from an accredited university/college with a degree in fire science or a related field supplemented by advanced courses and seminars in fire service leadership or EMS related fields. A minimum of two years of administrative and supervisory experience at a Company Officer level or higher. Experience with EMS/MC, Op/IQ, Emergency Reporting, ESO, Preferred.  

Minimum Qualifications:

  • Valid NC Class B Driver’s License

  • NC Certified FF II

  • NC OEMS PARAMEDIC / Certs in ACLS,PALS,PTLS,AMLS or(equivalent as approved by Carteret County Medical Director)

  • NC HAZ-MAT Level I Responder

  • NC EVD

  • NC Driver Operator Pumps (Aerials preferred)

  • ICS 100,200,700,800,300,400

  • NC Instructor II

  • NC Fire Officer II

  • NFA Leadership I,II,III

  • NC Chiefs 101 (able to obtain in 12 months)

  • NC FLSE I,II,III (Preferred)

  • NC Fire Inspector Level I ( able to obtain within 18 months)

Town of Newport Fire Department is accepting applications for full-time FF/Paramedic positions.  Our department covers a seventy five square mile area with a steadily increasing call volume of over 2200 in 2016.  The department currently runs one 24 hour ALS EMS unit and one 12 hour ALS unit.

Minimum Qualifications: 

Applicants must possess a high school diploma, 

Valid NC Driver’s License, 


NC Office of Emergency Medical services credential of EMT-Paramedic,


Haz - Mat Ops

Healthcare Provider CPR certification. 

Applicants must also possess ACLS, PALS, PHTLS, and AMLS.  

 (NIMS) ICS 100, 200, 700 and 800. 

Applicants must also pass oral boards in Carteret County prior to beginning work.  Applicants must be physically capable of operating Fire and EMS equipment including stretchers, stair chairs, backboards, ladders, fire hoses/nozzles, extrication equipment, saws, etc.
