The Utilities Department manages the water and sewer infrastructure of the Town and surrounding area in the EJT. There are over 40 miles of water and sewer lines for a wastewater system that has capacity of 1.2 million gallons. The new wastewater plant expansion is open for business.

The Public Works Department serves many functions within the Town of Newport.  The department provides maintenance of the town’s streets as well as municipal buildings and grounds.   The staff is responsible for 15 acres of recreational properties and weekly yard debris pick up.   They also maintain storm drains and open ditches located with the Town right of ways.    Other activities include cemetery management, mosquito program, and traffic sign management.  

To request a yard debris pick up during weeks with no scheduled pick up, please call Public Works at 223-3902 before 3:00pm on Tuesday.

This is a service that is provided to residents at no additional charge. Please remember that there are a few guidelines that we ask you to follow so that we can more effectively serve you and your neighbors. These guidelines are as follows.

  • No household garbage, construction debris, landscape timbers, or furniture.  If it doesn’t grow, it doesn’t go.
  • Small household appliances will be picked up as needed. Please notify the Newport Public Works Department if you should need these appliances removed from your yard.
  • Leaves, pine straw, grass, trimmings, and small branches should be placed in bags.
  • Please notify the Newport Public Works Department of hazardous materials such as poison ivy that may be in your piles.
  • Small limbs should be cut up into 4-foot lengths and placed parallel to the street. Please no tree stumps. No limbs or pieces of wood over 4 inches in diameter will be taken.
  • The Town will not pick up more than a pick up load of yard waste from one household.
  • The Town will not pick up home or landscape contractor’s debris. Contractors are required to haul away their own debris. This debris can be carried to the Coastal Regional Solid Waste site on Hibbs Road.
  • During adverse weather yard debris may be picked up on Tuesday with another quick pick up on Wednesday.
  • Yard debris will be picked up on the day prior or the day after a holiday if it should fall on a Wednesday.
  • Please have all yard debris out by 7 am on Wednesday.
